Skellefteå – a forerunner of sustainability
The Municipality of Skellefteå, one hundredth of Sweden, with secure and stable energy production from wind, water and biofuels, has taken on the challenge of oil independence by 2020. Skellefteå Kraft is leading the way and opening new opportunities for wind power in the north. Industry entrepreneurs like Kuusakoski and New Boliden are contributing to the cycle as a node for recycling electronic products in Europe. The municipality’s biogas plant supplies 20 biogas buses and private cars with biogas produced from household food waste. Wooden houses and bridges are also being built here from Norrland pine, with constant new concepts that are regenerating not only Skellefteå but also Växjö and Solna. Green companies include Green Exergy and Outotech, which export sustainable solutions to companies around the world.
